Officials said the strikes took place in two villages in the tribal area of North Waziristan and killed at least seven people including women and children.

A Pakistani television broadcaster reported that 21 people were killed in the strikes and that 17 foreigners were among the dead.

The United States has launched a flurry of strikes against suspected al-Qaida and Taliban targets in North and South Waziristan in recent weeks despite Pakistani protests over American broaches of Pakistan's sovereignty.

A Pakistani military spokesman said he was not immediately able to comment on the strikes.

A missile struck the village of Mohammad Khel, 20 miles west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, a region known as a hotbed of Taliban and al Qaeda support.

Earlier Pakistani intelligence officials reported another US airstrike on the North Waziristan village of Datta Khel, closer to the Afghan border.

But a military spokesman contradicted the account, saying it was a Nato airstrike on a target across the border in Afghanistan.

The American missile strikes into Pakistan, and in particular a commando ground assault on a Pakistani village, have strained relations between the two allies.
